Refelction of the year past

Well This is the last writing I have to do for my junior year. It's almost over but it feels like just yesterday I was a freshman. I have to say this years english class was very successful. The class was very interesting this year we did a lot on the topic of censorship. This was a great topic because we had so much to write and talk about. I found a lot of the group discussions very interesting when we all wearn't trying to talk at the same time. I enjoyed only reading four books but getting so in depth with each it really gave us time to understand all the little details in each book. We did so many fun activities that it made english class unforgettable. Thats all I have to say for this year I'll be back in the fall.

Censorship quote

This quote is from Ray bradbury " There is more than one way to burn a book." This quote I totaly agree with. What it means is that you don't have to actuly set a book on fire to damage it. By not reading books in farenheit 451 people were burning books. It eventuly got to the point where the government was burning books and killing the owners of them. I think this is a really good quote and I agree 100% with it.

My favorite book of the year

If I had to pick a favorite book for the year it would have to be Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. It was just a good all around book with a lot of meaning in it. I really Liked the whole idea of the dystopia where books were illegal. It shows what could happen if people don't stand out against their government, if everyone just becomes another face in the crowd. Even though it was published a long time ago it still managed to portray the future in a way which could happen. Not only was the book good but there was even a cheesy 60's movie to go with it.

Revisiting my opinion

There is one opinion piece that really came to mind when I read the question about revisiting old pieces. It was the piece about the topless coffee shop in Vassalboro. It was a very controversial topic to begin with but it ended up going through and became a real establishment. Since then it has become even more controlversial. After a few weeks of business the owner wanted to incorperate dancing in with his topless coffee. A lot of people from the community did not want this to happen. But just over a week ago The Grand View (topless) Coffee Shop was burnt down. According to officials it was Arson and possibly even attempted murder. This was such a great topic to write about.

Opinion pieces for next year

Next year I know we will be coming up with some crazy stuff to write about. There are a few subjects I hope to see and discuss. One subject we didn't really cover this year was drugs. We did a piece about some kid with a 14 ft. banner reading " Bong hits for Jesus" but I really think we should get more in depth. I think we should write a piece about the legalization of marijuana and a piece about Maine's high prescription drug abuse. These are both very real topics that are of common interest.
I was also hoping to write some pieces about our country's cruelty of prisoners. I have read some articles in NEWSWEEK magazine about it and I think it could really flare up some great discussions. Should torture be used to get terrorists to tell us their secrets? Some people would agree but others say there is better more American like ways to get information. These are two topics I hope are included in our opinion pieces.

How I have improved my writing this year

This year has been great for me I have improved in so many things including writing. I was always creative and thinking up cool things to write about but my handwriting was terrible and so was my flow. This year my handwriting is still awful but my flow is much smoother than current years. When I write everything seems to come together in a flowing creative way. I can state my opinion in an argument strongly and write paragraphs that are fluent and complete. I plan to continue my improvement of writing skills in the year to come. Next year I want to make my sentence structure a bit better and keep working on my fluency. I would also like to improve my spelling.

Favorite opinion piece

My favorite opinion piece is the piece about testing new drugs on animals. It was my highest scoring opinion piece and I think I did a really complete job. One of the reasons it is my favorite is because it really shows off some of the writing skill that I have but don't always apply. I wasn't even that interested in the topic but I still managed to put together a strong argument. I think I started out with a powerful intro that made the reader want to continue. In the body and conclusion paragraphs I think I made some points that would make any reader want to follow my opinion. That is why it is my favorite opinion piece.
